During the last weekend of March, the Program in Classical Studies (with a co-sponsorship from Mendenhall/University Unions) will present a production of the ancient Greek comedy Lysistrata, by Aristophanes.  You may heard of the story, even if you didn’t know the title: The men of Greece have been fighting a civil war, The Peloponnesian War, for twenty years.  Women from Athens, Sparta and other Greek cities conspire to bring an end to the war – by withholding sex from their husbands until they stop fighting.  As you might expect, the situation provides Aristophanes with a great opportunity for his trademark hilarity and coarseness.  A cast of 17 students will be performing the play in a new translation by Peter Green, who has served as a Whichard Chair in our College.

I am writing to you now, first, in the hopes that you will come to see the play and mention it to your students in class.  Word of mouth is the best advertising.  Thank you in advance if you get the chance to do this. Second, though, I want to offer our services.  The play touches on many themes that we teach in our classes: war and peace, gender roles and power, women’s roles in the maintenance of political systems, body images, rhetoric, violence and more.  If you are teaching a class this semester that in any way touches on the play’s themes and would like to tie your class to a campus event, please contact me.  I would be happy to visit classes and discuss it, either before or after the production.  I could bring actors and we could work with your class on how some important scenes are constructed.  Or anything else you might imagine.  Even if we won’t fit into your class schedule, I do hope you’ll encourage your students to see the play and think about the issues as they link up with the concepts you have been teaching.  Our purpose in performing this play is not only to provide a weekend of entertainment for the campus but also to offer an educational opportunity for students in Classical Studies and beyond.
