Database identifier mapping

Select the ID Mapping tab of the toolbar to map a list of identifiers from an external database to UniProtKB or vice versa:

  1. Enter the database identifiers into the form field or upload them from a file [*].
  2. Select a source database from the From drop-down list.
  3. Select a target database from the To drop-down list.
  4. Click the Map button.

If you want to map the search results from a query in UniProtKB to another database, just select the ID Mapping tab from the search result page to prefill the form with your query, then select the target database and click the Map button [*].

After you have submitted your data, you are forwarded to a page where you can download:

  • a tab-separated table that indicates which identifiers in the source database were mapped to which identifiers in the target database
  • a list of unique target database identifiers

If you mapped to UniProtKB, there is also a link to list the entries in a search result table, where they can be viewed, browsed, or filtered.

Jobs have unique identifiers, which (depending on the job type) can be used in queries (e.g. to get the intersection of two sequence similarity searches). Job identifiers and the related data are kept for 7 days, and are then deleted.

[*] Note that very large mapping requests (>100,000 identifiers) are likely to fail. If you prefer to run your mapping locally, you can alsodownload the data underlying this service.

Previous versions of this service supported a larger set of cross-referenced databases. For performance reasons, we have removed the support for databases where the mapping relationship to UniProtKB identifiers is one-to-many, e.g. GO, InterPro or PubMed. For limited lists of such identifiers, it is possible to query UniProtKB using the text search form with identifiers combined by "or", e.g. "interpro IPR014000" OR "interpro IPR014002" OR "interpro IPR014003". One can then further use the Customize display link to remove unwanted columns from the table view, or edit the query string (URL) to add "&columns=id,database(interpro)" to it. The same addition can be made to the URL for download of the tab-delimited view, e.g. http://www.uniprot.org/uniprot/?query=%22interpro+IPR014000%22+or+%22interpro+IPR014002%22+or+%22interpro+IPR014003%22&format=tab&columns=id,database(interpro).

Code examples for programmatic access to the database identifier mapping service are available in our FAQ about programmatic access.
